ioSafe Solo Software

The ioSafe Solo generally requires no software or special drivers for use as an external hard drive. The simplest of all backups is to simple "drag and drop" a copy of your critical data files onto the ioSafe Solo from your primary drive. IMPORTANT NOTE: Always keep at least 2 copies of your critical data files on at least 2 separate devices. The word "backup" means to make a redundant copy - not to simply "move" the files from one device to another.

While upgrading a system with a new operating system, be sure to always have at least 2 copies. We strongly recommend, while upgrading to a new operating system, your original primary hard drive be removed from the system and replaced with a new one. Install the new operating system on the new hard drive. Using this technique, you'll always be able to return to your original disk in case you run into any problems. Please have your local IT support person help you with this process if this all sounds confusing.

Many of our users of various IT skill levels want our recommendations for software that automates the backup process. If you have a preferred backup software that can backup to an external hard drive, it will generally work with the ioSafe Solo. Below is a list of several software options that we have historically had good luck with:

  • Simple File Sync - Freeware

    SyncBack Freeware http://www.2brightsparks.com/downloads.html

For PC users with intermediate experience who just want a simple file synchronization. Using "Scheduled Tasks" within Windows, you can create a backup schedule that resumes only when the computer is idle (nice!). This program is not for "open file" (i.e. an active Quickbooks or Outlook database) or full disaster recovery of the computer system.

  • Continuous Data Protection with Disaster Recovery (Full System Restore)

For Novice to experienced PC Users - Windows XP, Vista or 7 OS, we recommend Rebit SaveMe or SaveMe Express. (Street prices: $30-$50).

http://www.rebit.com/products-software.html This product does not run on Windows Server OS. This product will enable full bare metal restore of the entire primary hard drive. Continuously runs in the background. Backs up open files as well as all system files, programs, desktop, etc.

For all Mac Users - Use Time Machine (already embedded with new Mac OS) and set the ioSafe Solo as the target.

  • Traditional Schedule Backups of System and/or Files

For experienced MS Server or PC Users - Acronis (http://www.acronis.com) or Genie-Soft (http://www.genie-soft.com/) Backup Manager products.

IMPORTANT NOTE (AGAIN!): Always keep at least 2 copies of your critical data files on at least 2 separate devices. The word "backup" means to make a redundant copy - not to simply "move" the files from one device to another.
